Density Test Sand (Sand Cone), 50lb Bag, ASTM D1556

The Sand Cone Density Sand 50lb Bag is clean, uniform, un-cemented, and free-flowing, meeting the test method for density as outlined in ASTM D 1556 and AASHTO T 191. Few particles pass No.200 (75µm) or are retained on No.10 (2.00mm) sieves. Uniformity coefficient less than 2.0, and less than 3% passes No.60 (250µm). Bulk density varies less than 1%. Please review regulatory limitations before using the sand for testing.

This specially graded sand for ASTM tests are naturally rounded silica sands of nearly pure quartz, mined from the Ottawa, Illinois area. Not suitable for highly plastic soils.

Material Safety Data Sheet

Meets Test Methods: AASHTO T 191 ASTM D1556

Overview

The Sand Cone Density Sand is a high quality, specially graded sand for use in the sand cone method for determining the unit weight of soil in place. Sand cone method is not suitable for soils containing substantial amounts of coarse material. Made from naturally rounded silica sands of nearly pure quartz, this sand is clean, uniform, uncemented and free-flowing, for accurate and reliable test results. With its unique properties, this sand is ideal for civil engineering, architectural and construction projects. The naturally rounded silica sands provide consistency and precision, for professionals who need dependable data on the density unit weight of soil. Sand cone method is not suitable for unbound granular materials.

Technical Specifications per ASTM tests

  • Material: Naturally rounded silica sands of nearly pure quartz

  • Origin: Mined from the Ottawa, Illinois area

  • Particle size: Few particles pass No. 200 (75μm) or are retained on No. 10 (2.00mm) sieves

  • Uniformity coefficient: Less than 2.0

  • Bulk density: Varies less than 1%

  • Standards: Meets ASTM tests D1556/1556M and AASHTO T 191 standards

  • Limitations: Not suitable for soils containing appreciable amounts of coarse material larger than 1.5 inches in diameter

  • Alternative Methods: Use alternative methods when excavating test hole volumes larger than specified volume

These specifications highlight the quality and consistency of the sand which is required for accurate and reliable test results. The naturally rounded silica sands of nearly pure quartz ensures the sand is free-flowing and uniform for use in various test methods and applications.

Compliance

The Sand Cone Density Sand 50lb Bag meets the requirements of ASTM D1556 and AASHTO T 191 standards for sand cone density testing of soils. Compliance to these standards is critical for accurate and reliable test results. Sand cone method is a widely used test method in construction industry, provides a standardized way to determine the in-place density and unit weight of soils. Compliance to these standards not only ensures the quality of construction materials but also ensures the results are consistent and dependable which is key to any construction project.

Benefits of Ottawa Density Sand and Naturally Rounded Silica Sands for Civil Engineering & Architectural Projects

Ottawa Density Sand is a versatile and reliable material for civil engineering and architectural projects. It has many advantages over other materials, it can withstand extreme temperatures, non-toxic and low cost. Ottawa Density Sand can be used in various applications from large construction projects to small residential projects. Its unique properties make it ideal for any project that requires a high quality material that will last for years to come. In this article we will discuss the benefits of using Ottawa Density Sand for civil engineering and architectural projects.

Sand Cone

This test method for density is a standardized way to determine the in-place density unit weight of soils using a sand cone apparatus. Sand cone is a standard in place density test.Sand cone method is a widely used test method to determine the unit weight of soil in place. This method involves using a sand cone apparatus to measure the volume of soil excavated and the weight of sand used to fill the hole. The in-place density and unit weight of the soil is then calculated based on the test hole volumes and weight measurements. The importance of theoretical saturation density as a benchmark for assessing in-place density cannot be overstated. This method is a reliable and accurate standard test method for determining the unit weight of soil and is commonly used in civil engineering and construction projects. By using the Sand Cone Density Sand, professionals can get precise and consistent results which is key to their projects. The zero air voids line is a theoretical benchmark on a dry density versus water content plot, indicating the maximum density achievable without air voids in the soil matrix.

Applications

The Sand Cone Density Sand 50lb Bag is versatile and can be used in:

  • Civil Engineering Projects: This method is used in civil engineering to determine the unit weight of soil in place to ensure the stability and integrity of structures.

  • Architectural Projects: In architectural projects, this method ensures compliance to building codes and regulations, provides a reliable measure of soil density.

  • Construction Projects: This method is essential in construction projects to assess the quality of construction materials and identify potential issues that can affect the project’s success.

  • Geotechnical Engineering: Geotechnical engineers use sand cone method to determine the density and unit weight of soil in place which is critical for designing foundations and other structural elements.

By using the Sand Cone Density Sand, professionals in these fields can get precise and consistent results which ensures the quality and safety of their projects.
