What Are Cylinder Molds Used For?

Concrete cylinders test the compressive strength of hardened concrete. This compression performance measurement is among the most common tests used by engineers when designing buildings and other structures which utilize a concrete foundation. Concrete samples or specimens are collected from the mixer truck and ought to be obtained according to ASTM C 172 requirements to ensure the specimens are representative of the concrete delivery units.

How Many Cylinder Molds for Concrete Testing for Each Batch of Concrete?

The exact number of  cylinder molds tests required for a particular project or application can vary depending on the particular situation. Typically, three concrete specimens of the same dimension are cast in concrete cylinders for testing. However, it is not uncommon for a set of two to six concrete cylinders to be cast at a minimum for every 150 cubic yards of concrete placed. It is important to consult ASTM regulations to determine the precise concrete cylinder tests that should be performed to ensure the quality and safety of the foundations and structures to be constructed.

Determining What Plastic Cylinder Molds Size For Concrete Testing You Require

The use of 4x8 in cylinder molds or 6x12 in cylinder molds are permitted by ASTM C 31 and ASTM C 39 so long as your specific project meets certain requirements. The concrete cylinder testing diameter must be at least three times the nominal maximum size of the coarse aggregate. The nominal maximum size of an aggregate is the smallest sieve opening through which the entire amount of aggregate is permitted to pass. As a result, 4x8 concrete test cylinders can be specified if no aggregate used for making the concrete cylinder is retained on a 1¼ in. (31.5 mm) sieve. If this is retained, 6x12 concrete cylinders or another appropriate testing solution must be used.

In addition to ASTM C470, ASTM C 31 and C 39 standards, you should consult your local state and county requirements to determine what concrete cylinder sizes to utilize for your specific project. Whether you are involved in general construction, highway maintenance, or creating new streets and bridges, Certified MTP has concrete test cylinders for your unique application. Our concrete cylinder sizes include:

When in Doubt, Familiarize Yourself with Concrete Cylinder Molds Regulations & Procedures

If you are preparing to conduct concrete cylinder tests, it is important to review the official concrete cylinder testing regulations and procedures designated by ASTM. The following is not a comprehensive list of the rules and regulations for conducting concrete cylinder tests, but they are essential to most construction projects and applications:

  • ASTM C 31, Standard Practice for Making and Curing Concrete Test Specimens in the Field

  • ASTM C 39, Standard Test Method for Compressive Strength of Cylindrical Concrete Specimens

  • ASTM C 172, Standard Practice for Sampling Freshly Mixed Concrete

  • ASTM C 617, Standard Practice for Capping Cylindrical Concrete Specimen

  • ASTM C 470, Standard Specification for Molds for Forming Concrete Test Cylinders Vertically
