Cleveland Flash Point Tester
The Cleveland Flash Point Tester is an essential piece of laboratory equipment designed to determine the flash and fire points of petroleum products and other flammable liquids using the Cleveland Open Cup (COC) method. This method is specifically for materials that ignite at temperatures above 175°F (79°C), making it a crucial safety and quality control test for lubricants, bitumen, and other viscous materials.
This robust unit is built for precision and durability. Its powerful 1,250-watt nickel-chromium heater is managed by a variable control rheostat, allowing for an accurate and steady rate of temperature rise as mandated by testing standards. The open flash cup rests securely on an insulated platform to minimize heat loss and ensure uniform heating. For user convenience and safety, the entire heating element is enclosed in a rugged stainless steel housing featuring cooling vents.
The tester includes a pivoting test-flame burner, which requires an external gas supply, allowing for the consistent application of the test flame over the sample. An adjustable thermometer positioning bracket ensures the thermometer is held at the precise depth and position required by the standard. This bracket can also be raised to allow for easy placement and removal of the brass flash cup.
Key Features:
- Standard Compliance: Fully meets the requirements of ASTM D92 and AASHTO T 48 standards.
- Accurate Temperature Control: A variable 1,250-watt electric heater allows for precise temperature rate-of-rise adjustments.
- Durable Construction: Features a stainless steel housing with an insulated platform to reduce heat loss and enhance stability.
- User-Friendly Design: Includes a pivoting test-flame burner and an adjustable thermometer holder for easy operation.
Included Components:
- Cleveland Flash Point Tester unit (available in 115V, 60Hz or 220V, 50/60Hz models)
- Integrated Electric Heater with variable control
- Brass Flash Cup
- Pivoting Test-Flame Burner
- Adjustable Thermometer Positioning Bracket
Required Accessories (Ordered Separately):
To perform the test, a temperature measuring device is required. The following are suitable options:
- ASTM 11C Mercury Thermometer: The traditional choice, with a range of -6°C to 400°C.
- Platinum RTD Digital Thermometer: A safe, mercury-free alternative offering high accuracy and a digital display. A model with a range of -200°C to 500°C (-328°F to 932°F) and NIST traceability is recommended.
Applicable Standards:
- ASTM D92: Standard Test Method for Flash and Fire Points by Cleveland Open Cup Tester.
- AASHTO T 48: Standard Method of Test for Flash and Fire Points by Cleveland Open Cup.
