What is Asphalt Pulverization?
Asphalt pulverization is the process of grinding up the existing asphalt layer including the top layer of asphalt and the underlying stone and aggregate to create a new base surface for new hot asphalt.
Binding fluid plays a crucial role in the stabilization process by mixing with the pulverized materials to enhance the strength and durability of the new surface. This is also known as asphalt milling or asphalt grinding. The resulting mix is an even blend of the crushed asphalt and aggregate that can be used as a base material for new asphalt pavement.
By recycling the existing pavement, this method reduces the need for new materials and provides a solid base for the new hot mix asphalt layer so the new pavement will last longer and be more durable. The resulting mixture, which includes crushed asphalt and binding agents, is essential for creating a durable road base.
The process involves grading and compacting the resulting mixture to form a strong and revitalized road base capable of supporting a new layer of asphalt.
Asphalt Pulverizer Process
The asphalt pulverizer process begins with the use of a machine equipped with rotating blades that grind up the top layer of asphalt and its underlying aggregate.
This machine can reach depths of 2 to 12 inches, depending on the requirements of the project, to pulverize the layers of existing asphalt. The result is a single, even mix of asphalt and aggregate, creating a uniform layer that serves as a new base surface for fresh asphalt installation.
This process is a surface preparation method that involves grinding and mixing, ensuring a smooth surface for the new overlay. The use of specialized techniques and equipment, such as a cold planer, facilitates the pulverizing process, making it efficient and effective.
How does the BICO Braun Pulverizer work?
The BICO Braun Pulverizer is a machine designed for hot mix asphalt pulverization. It uses a milling process, which involves removing the top layer of asphalt, to create a uniform mix of pulverized asphalt and aggregate.
The material is then recycled for new pavement, promoting sustainability. The machine can grind up to 12 inches deep so you can pulverize multiple layers of asphalt.
This method of crushing existing pavement allows for the reuse of materials, ensuring the pulverized asphalt is evenly distributed so there’s a solid base for the new asphalt layer and better overall pavement.
Equipment Features and Operation
The equipment used for asphalt pulverization is designed to handle the demands of the process. It features rotating blades that are capable of grinding through the pavement and aggregate, creating a uniform mix.
The machine is also equipped with a system for collecting and conveying the pulverized material, which can then be mixed with new pavement and laid down as a new surface.
The operation of the equipment requires skilled operators who can maneuver the machine to achieve the desired depth and uniformity. The use of conveyor belts and waiting trucks facilitates the transportation of the pulverized material to the plant for mixing with pavement, ensuring a seamless process.
Applications and Uses
Asphalt pulverization has a wide range of applications and uses, including the rehabilitation of asphalt parking lots, roadways, and driveways. It is particularly useful for projects where the existing asphalt is damaged but the underlying base is still intact.
The process can also be used to repair cracks and potholes, creating a smooth surface that is safe for traffic. Additionally, asphalt pulverization can be used as a method for pavement rehabilitation, allowing for the full rehabilitation of the asphalt surface without the need for complete removal and replacement.
This method is environmentally friendly, as it reduces waste and the need for new materials, making it an attractive option for those looking for a sustainable solution.
BICO Braun Pulverizer Benefits
The BICO Braun Pulverizer has:
-
Environmental benefits: Pulverization is an environmentally friendly process that reduces waste and conserves natural resources. It uses minimal new material, which enhances sustainability.
-
Less traffic disruption: Pulverization can be done in one pass so you don’t need multiple passes and less traffic disruption.
-
Better pavement for asphalt parking lot: The material from asphalt pulverization can be used to create a solid surface for new pavement so the pavement will be better and last longer. The pulverized material is overlaid with new mixes, ensuring a durable and strong surface.
