ASTM/AASHTO Constant Head Permeameters

The ASTM/AASHTO Constant Head Permeameters are designed to determine the coefficient of permeability for granular soils using the constant head method for laminar water flow. Available in sizes ranging from 2.5–9.0in (63.5–228.6mm) diameter, these permeameters support testing for various particle top sizes. The clear acrylic sample chamber provides a convenient view during testing.

Each permeameter features two sidewall manometer ports covered with No.100 (150µm) stainless steel mesh to prevent soil material from entering the manometer. A compression spring on the top cap applies 5–10lbs (2.3–4.5kgs) of force to the top porous stone or perforated plate, maintaining consistent soil density throughout testing. Included tubing and anodized aluminum end caps with valves and ports allow for easy connection to vacuum and water sources. Models with 6.0in and 9.0in diameters come with porous plates for both the top and bottom of the sample, while smaller models include porous stones.

A separate manometer is required for ASTM/AASHTO compliance, with options including the Free-Standing Manometer or the Wall-Mounted Manometer.
