Asphalt Institute Vacuum Viscometer, Size 400
The Asphalt Institute Vacuum Viscometer is a specialized piece of laboratory equipment designed to determine the absolute viscosity of highly viscous materials like bitumen (asphalt cement) at a standard temperature of 140°F (60°C). This process is crucial for grading asphalt and ensuring its quality and performance in paving and roofing applications.
Principle of Operation: The viscometer operates on the principle of capillary viscometry under vacuum. A precise volume of the sample is drawn through a calibrated capillary tube over a measured period. The time it takes for the liquid to pass between two marked points is recorded. This elapsed time is then multiplied by the viscometer's unique calibration constant to calculate the absolute viscosity in poise (P).
For accurate testing, a minimum sample volume of 3mL is required. The viscometer must be submerged in a constant temperature water bath with a minimum depth of 7in (180mm) to maintain the specified test temperature of 60°C.
Product Details: The Size 400 model is specifically designed for materials with a very high viscosity, covering a range of 9,600 to 200,000 poise. The capillary tube is permanently graduated for easy and accurate readings. For secure and stable operation within the water bath, a Viscometer Holder is required.
Compliance: This viscometer is manufactured to meet the rigorous specifications of industry standards AASHTO T 202 and ASTM D2171/2171M, ensuring reliable and repeatable results for quality control and material specification.
Available Models: Asphalt Institute Vacuum Viscometers are available in five different sizes to cover a wide spectrum of viscosity ranges, all tested at 140°F (60°C):
- PT-111 (Size 25): 42–800 poise
- PT-112 (Size 50): 180–3,200 poise
- PT-113 (Size 100): 600–12,800 poise
- PT-114 (Size 200): 2,400–52,000 poise
- PT-115 (Size 400): 9,600–200,000 poise
