The Asphalt Institute Vacuum Viscometer, Size 200, is a specialized laboratory instrument designed for determining the absolute viscosity of highly viscous materials like asphalt binders (bitumen) at 140°F (60°C). This viscometer is essential for quality control and specification compliance in the paving and roofing industries, ensuring that asphalt materials meet the required performance standards.

How it Works: The viscometer operates on a vacuum capillary principle. A 3mL sample of the material is introduced into the viscometer, which is then placed in a constant temperature bath set to 140°F (60°C) to ensure the sample reaches thermal equilibrium. A controlled vacuum is applied, drawing the asphalt through a precisely calibrated capillary tube. The time it takes for the leading edge of the asphalt to pass between two marked timing lines is measured in seconds. This elapsed time is then multiplied by the viscometer's unique calibration constant (provided on the included certificate) to calculate the absolute viscosity in poise (P).

The Size 200 model (PT-114) is specifically designed for a viscosity range of 2,400 to 52,000 poise. This makes it suitable for testing standard paving-grade asphalts. The Asphalt Institute offers a total of five different sizes to accommodate a wide spectrum of viscosities, from softer materials to highly modified binders.

Required for Operation: To conduct a test, a constant temperature bath with a minimum depth of 7 inches (180mm) is required to maintain the precise temperature. Additionally, the PT-114 viscometer must be held securely upright in the bath using a Viscometer Neoprene Holder (Model PTA-100), which is sold separately.
