3mm Hardmetal Tungsten Carbide Grinding Balls (100 Pieces)

Product Overview

These high-density 3mm grinding balls are engineered from hardmetal tungsten carbide, offering superior hardness and wear resistance for milling applications. Designed for use with Fritsch Planetary Mills, these balls are essential for efficiently reducing sample sizes to fine powders. This package contains 100 pieces, ideal for achieving consistent and precise grinding results.

Principle of Grinding

Grinding balls are placed inside a grinding bowl along with the material to be processed. The high-energy impact and friction generated by the movement of the planetary mill cause the balls to pulverize the sample.

The final particle size of the milled sample is directly influenced by the size, density, and quantity of the grinding balls used.

  • Ball Size: Smaller balls (like these 3mm ones) are ideal for achieving a very fine final product due to their increased number of contact points. Larger balls typically result in a coarser grind. It is not recommended to mix ball sizes in the same grinding process, as this can lead to inefficient grinding and inconsistent results.
  • Ball Quantity & Loading: The number of balls affects the grinding time and the fineness of the final product. Using a higher volume of balls generally speeds up the process and produces a narrower particle size distribution. However, overfilling the bowl can hinder performance. A general rule is that the grinding balls and the sample should not exceed two-thirds of the grinding bowl's volume, leaving at least one-third of the space empty to allow for effective movement and impact.

Material Selection

To minimize contamination and ensure effective grinding, the grinding media (bowls and balls) should be harder than the sample being milled.

  • Tungsten Carbide: As one of the hardest materials available for grinding media, tungsten carbide is perfect for processing very hard, abrasive samples.
  • Cross-Contamination: For exceptionally hard samples where maximum efficiency is needed, it is possible to use tungsten carbide balls in steel-lined bowls. However, be aware that using dissimilar materials for the balls and bowl may introduce slight cross-contamination from the softer material.
