15mm Grinding Ball, Hardened Stainless Steel
These 15mm hardened stainless steel grinding balls are essential components for achieving precise particle size reduction in Fritsch Planetary Mills. Designed for durability and optimal performance, they are ideal for a wide range of laboratory milling applications.
How Grinding Balls Work: Grinding balls are placed inside grinding bowls along with your sample material. During the milling process, the high-energy impact and friction generated by the balls reduce the sample to a desired fineness. The final particle size distribution is directly influenced by the diameter and quantity of the grinding balls used. Generally, larger balls facilitate a coarser grind, while smaller balls lead to a finer product. For consistent results, it is crucial to use balls of a uniform size within a single grinding session.
Optimizing Your Grinding Process: The ideal selection of ball size and quantity is often best determined through empirical user trials, as it can vary significantly with sample type and desired output. As a general guideline:
- Quantity: Increasing the number of balls can reduce grinding times and produce finer particle distributions, up to an optimal loading point.
- Loading: To ensure effective grinding action, the total volume of grinding balls and sample should not exceed two-thirds of the grinding bowl's capacity. One-third of the bowl volume should remain free for proper movement and impact.
Material Compatibility and Contamination: It is paramount to select grinding balls and bowls made from a material harder than your sample. This prevents contamination from the grinding media and ensures efficient processing. For exceptionally hard or abrasive materials, consider using:
- Tungsten Carbide Balls: Highly effective for extremely tough samples when paired with steel bowls.
- Zirconium Oxide Balls: Excellent for hard materials, particularly when used with corundum bowls. Please be aware that using dissimilar materials for balls and bowls, or when grinding certain samples, carries a risk of cross-contamination that should be carefully evaluated for your specific application.
Packaging and Compatibility:
- Grinding balls with a 3mm diameter or smaller are sold in packs of 100 pieces. All other sizes, including these 15mm hardened stainless steel balls, are sold individually.
- These grinding balls are compatible with 500ml, 250ml, and 80ml Classic Grinding Bowls or Premium Grinding Bowls (bowls sold separately). For optimal results, ensure your chosen bowl material matches the hardness requirements of your sample and balls.
