15lb Stainless Steel Bottom Dredge
Bottom dredges are designed primarily for sampling sand and silt but can handle most non-cohesive materials, excluding hard-packed clay. The bucket has nominal dimensions of 8.75" wide, 4.5" high, and 6" deep with a circular shape. Made of 300-series stainless steel, the sampler body and jaws are durable, while the arms are constructed from powder-coated carbon steel.
The sampling chambers feature screened tops to allow water to flow through during deployment, minimizing displacement and shock waves that could result in sample loss. A two-way mechanism prevents accidental closure as the dredge descends. Upon impact with the bottom surface, a spring-loaded release triggers the sampler to close. One jaw includes an underlip to displace stones or gravel during closure. Once closed, the dredge is pulled back to retrieve the sample. Careful release of the sample allows for sediment profile analysis, preserving its original structure as found on the bottom.
