The Turf-Tec Penetrometer is a professional instrument to determine soil compaction.
The Turf-Tec Penetrometer will show the surface compaction of the soil or the hardness / firmness of the surface. By dropping the calibrated weighted impact shaft from a known height, the blunt penetrating point enters into the soil showing surface harness on the graduated scale on the top of the unit.
The Turf-Tec Penetrometer is a necessary tool to help determine problems before they become visually apparent. It is useful in determining when to Aerify an area and also assess an area for potential problems. The center weighted shaft is simply raised above the soil surface and then the release trigger is pulled, allowing a 0.25 inch blunt penetrating point to enter the soil by gravity. The top of the shaft is etched with a specially designed engineering scale showing the compaction results as follows:
- "0" indicated no compaction or uncompacted sand
- "50%" indicates a soil in good tilth with 50% solids and 50% for air
- "60%" is typical for firmer golf greens
- "100%" indicates solid compaction with on penetration and no soil air space similar to a cement surface.
The Turf-Tec Penetrometer is useful in determining how golf balls will react when they land on an approach or golf green. It is also useful in sports turf applications to insure the field is soft enough to prevent athletes injuries. See how it works on this video.
Turf-Tec Penetrometer shows the amount of pore space within the soil in quarter point percentages.
The new and improved Turf-Tec Penetrometer shows compaction in percentages with new calibration lines. (.25% increments)
Use the Turf-Tec Penetrometer to determine soil compaction in percentages of pore space within the soil profile.
On Golf Greens the Turf-Tec Penetrometer is helpful in determining if playability is uniform in firmness from green to green.
On athletic fields, the Penetrometer will show how hard the soil is to gauge player safety and also footing. It can prevent player injury by allowing sports turf manager to keep fields in playable conditions year round.
It is the most widely used tool for determining when to Aerify a turfgrass area in the world.
