Thermocouple, Type K, Ungrounded Junction, 1/8in Diameter, 12in Length, Mini Male Plug
Thermocouples are among the most common, versatile, and convenient devices for measuring temperature across a vast array of industrial, commercial, and scientific applications. They are valued for their wide temperature range, durability, and cost-effectiveness.
How do thermocouples work?
Thermocouples operate on the principle of the Seebeck effect. This phenomenon occurs when two wires made from different metals are joined at two points, creating a closed circuit. When one of these junctions (the "hot" or measuring junction) is heated, a temperature gradient is established, which generates a small thermoelectric voltage, or Electromotive Force (EMF).
This EMF is directly proportional to the temperature difference between the measuring junction and the other junction (the "cold" or reference junction). This voltage can then be measured and converted into a precise temperature reading. By carefully selecting the metal alloys for the wires, thermocouples can be engineered to measure temperatures from as low as -200°C (-328°F) to as high as 2316°C (4200°F).
Type K Thermocouples
The "Type K" designation refers to a specific combination of metals—typically Chromel and Alumel. Type K is the most popular general-purpose thermocouple due to its wide operating range (-200°C to 1250°C), low cost, and good resistance to oxidation. The "ungrounded junction" means the thermocouple junction is electrically isolated from the outer protective sheath, which helps to reduce electrical interference and ensures a more stable, accurate signal.
