Sand Cone Density Apparatus (6.5in) – Compliant with ASTM D1556 & AASHTO T191
The Sand Cone Density Apparatus Set is a reliable and inexpensive field instrument used to determine the in-place density of soils, aggregates, and other granular materials. This essential piece of geotechnical testing equipment is fully compliant with ASTM D1556 and AASHTO T191 standard test methods, ensuring accurate and repeatable results for quality control in construction and civil engineering projects.
How the Sand Cone Density Test Works
The sand cone test is a widely accepted method for measuring the density of compacted soils on-site. The process involves:
- Excavating a small, uniform hole in the material to be tested.
- Using the apparatus to fill the hole with a known-density, free-flowing sand.
- Determining the volume of the excavated hole by measuring the weight of the sand required to fill it.
- Calculating the in-place density of the original material by dividing the weight of the excavated soil by the volume of the test hole.
This method is ideal for testing soils with a maximum particle size up to 2in (51mm) and is suitable for test hole volumes of approximately 0.1ft³ (2.8L). Its simplicity and accuracy make it a staple for geotechnical engineers, construction professionals, and material scientists.
Key Features and Construction
- Durable Construction: The set features a rugged 1-gallon (3.8L) threaded plastic jar, which is less fragile than traditional glass jars, making it ideal for field use.
- Precision Valve and Cone Assembly: A detachable double-cone fitting attaches securely to the jar. This assembly includes a durable metal top cone and a larger 6.5in (165mm) flanged bottom cone.
- Smooth Operation: A brass cylindrical valve is positioned between the cones. It features a 0.5in (12.7mm) orifice and built-in stops to prevent it from rotating past the fully open or fully closed positions, ensuring controlled sand flow.
- Compatibility: The flanged opening is designed to sit securely on a field density plate (sold separately), creating a stable base for accurate measurements.
Applications
The Sand Cone Density Apparatus is indispensable for:
- Verifying compaction levels of soil and aggregate bases for roads, foundations, and embankments.
- Ensuring construction materials meet project specifications and quality standards.
- Providing crucial data for geotechnical investigations and civil engineering projects.
