The testing process involves placing a disc-shaped binder sample between two parallel plates and applying horizontal oscillation to measure dynamic shear properties.

The Anton Paar SmartPave 92 Dynamic Shear Rheometer is designed for reliable and efficient quality control testing of 8mm and 25mm asphalt samples. It excels at classifying SHRP/SuperPave PG binders, making it an excellent choice for asphalt production facilities. Its synchronous, brushless DC motor operates with a frictionless air bearing, enabling precise movement and sensitive measurements. The rheometer features a maximum torque of 125 mNm and a minimum oscillation torque of 1 μNm, with a speed range of 10⁻³ to 1,500 rpm. It requires a clean, dry, oil-free compressed air supply with operating pressures of 58 to 101 psi (4 to 7 bar) and an optimal pressure of 87 psi (6 bar).

The SmartPave 92 comes with RheoCompass™ software tailored to the asphalt industry. The software offers step-by-step guidance through standard tests, automated temperature calibration, and simplified data retrieval and reporting. Toolmaster™ technology ensures automatic recognition and configuration of components, while Quick-Connect coupling allows one-handed, fast assembly. TruRay LED lighting enhances visibility for sample setup and proper gap filling, and the sliding rail design makes sample access easy during trimming and setup.

For more advanced requirements, the SmartPave II DSR offers full compliance with ASTM and AASHTO temperature control standards. It features a patented active Peltier temperature hood that regulates temperature above and below the sample, eliminating gradients and enabling faster heating and cooling. This results in shorter test times and improved reproducibility. The system operates in a dry environment with no water flow around the sample. Its temperature range spans from -5°C to 200°C with gradients less than 0.1°C. Installation and training costs for this model are quoted separately by the manufacturer.
