Gilson Gray Iron 9000 Sulfur Capping For Concrete (40 Bags, 50LB)

Gilson Gray Iron 9000 Capping Compound is a new and improved sulphur mortar capping compound for even load distribution during concrete strength testing. Ultra thin low odor flakes made from sulphur and mineral filler.

Gray Iron melts at 230°–240°F (110°–115°C) with a wide pouring range of 265°–290°F (129°–143°C). Set time is about 1 minute and shrinkage is minimal. A good melting pot is important for even melting of the capping compound which is critical for accurate compressive strength testing.

If overheated accidentally the compound can be used after cooling and solidified material can be re-melted with no loss of properties. Compressive strength is 8,000psi at 2 hours for 2in cubes for ASTM C617 and bond strength is 150psi or more. Do not use partially melted compound to maintain properties of the capping material. Capped specimens do not lose strength and bond properties over time even in humid storage.

Each bag is 50lb (22.68kg); order 40 or more for the bulk price.

Material Sulfur and Crystalline Silica

Concrete Capping Compound for Concrete Test Cylinders:

  • Sulfur mortar capping compound for faster melting time and lower pour temperature

Capping compound is an important part of the process of bonding concrete cylinders for concrete compression testing. Capping compounds are special materials applied to the ends of concrete cylinders to create a smooth surface for load distribution during testing.

Capping compounds are high strength materials such as sulphur based compounds or epoxy resins. They are mixed and prepared according to specific guidelines and standards to achieve the desired consistency and properties. The capping compound is then applied to the ends of the concrete cylinders.

The purpose of capping compounds is to provide a smooth surface for load transfer during compression testing. By capping the specimens the irregularities or imperfections on the ends of the concrete cylinders such as laitance or surface roughness are eliminated. This ensures the load applied during testing is evenly distributed across the cross section of the specimen so accurate compressive strength can be determined.

Capping compounds also minimize the end effects on the test results. They reduce the risk of local stress concentrations or failure modes at the specimen ends which can affect the measured compressive strength. The use of capping compounds gives a more representative and reliable assessment of the concrete’s overall strength and performance.

Also capping compounds provide a protective layer that preserves the integrity of the concrete specimens during handling and testing. They prevent moisture ingress and minimize damage to the ends so the specimens remain in the same condition for accurate and repeatable testing.

In summary capping compounds are an important part of the process of bonding concrete cylinders for compression testing. They create a smooth surface, minimize end effects and protect the specimens so you can test the concrete’s compressive strength and mechanical properties.

Safety and Handling

When handling sulphur capping compound be sure to take necessary safety precautions to avoid injury and exposure to hazardous materials. Here are some guidelines:

  1. Wear PPE: Wear heavy gloves, eye protection, respiratory masks and cover exposed skin to avoid irritation and injury.

  2. Ventilation: Handle the compound in a well ventilated area to avoid inhaling fumes.

  3. Avoid Skin Contact: The compound can cause irritation and burns so avoid direct skin contact. If contact occurs wash the affected area with soap and water immediately.

  4. Prevent Inhaling Fumes: Fumes emitted during melting can cause respiratory problems. Use proper respiratory protection and ensure good ventilation.

  5. Keep Work Area Clean: Keep the melting pot and surrounding area clean and free from debris to avoid accidents.

  6. Follow Manufacturer’s Instructions: Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for melting and handling the compound to use safely and effectively.

  7. Dispose Properly: Dispose of the compound and its packaging according to local regulations and guidelines to ensure environmental safety.

By following these guidelines you can handle sulphur capping compound safely and effectively to avoid injury and exposure to hazardous materials.

Applications and Uses of Sulphur for Concrete Cylinders

Sulphur capping compound is used in the construction industry for:

  1. Concrete Cylinder Capping: The compound is used for capping concrete cylinders used for compressive strength testing to get a smooth and even surface for accurate results.

  2. Capping of Cylindrical Concrete Specimens: Used to cap concrete cylinders for testing purposes.

  3. Bonded Concrete Cylinders for Capping: Ideal for bonded concrete cylinders for capping applications to get reliable and repeatable test results.

  4. Concrete Testing Equipment: Sulfur capping compound is used in concrete testing equipment such as quality melting pots to prepare and apply the capping material.

  5. High Strength Concrete Testing: Suitable for testing high strength concrete including concretes with strengths over 50 MPa (7250 psi) to accurately determine compressive strength.

These applications show the versatility and importance of sulphur capping compound in the construction industry especially in compressive strength testing of concrete cylinders.

Benefits and Advantages

Sulphur capping compound has the following benefits and advantages:

  1. Even Load Distribution: The compound helps to distribute loading forces evenly during concrete strength testing to get accurate and reliable results.

  2. Correct Thickness: Can be applied to the correct thickness so the concrete cylinders are properly aligned for testing.

  3. High Compressive Strength: Has high compressive strength to test high strength concrete and get reliable data.

  4. Easy to Use: Easy to melt and apply making it convenient for concrete testing professionals.

  5. Cost Effective: Compared to other capping materials like neoprene pads sulphur capping compound is cost effective.
