Double Ring Infiltrometer Test: Infiltration Rings, Heavy Duty, 6in and 12in
Heavy Duty Double Ring Infiltration Rings (6" & 12", 4" Tall)
Heavy Duty Double Ring Infiltration Rings are used for fast and accurate soil infiltration testing with minimal water and setup time. Designed for geotechnical professionals, students, and field testing, these rings measure how quickly water infiltrates soil.
The set includes a 6-inch inner ring and 12-inch outer ring, both 4 inches tall, made from 16-gauge (.065") galvanized steel for rust resistance and long life. Built for hard and rocky soils, the rings feature a rubber grip handle for easy insertion, typically 2 inches into the soil.
During testing, water is added to both rings and the water level drop in the center ring is measured over time to calculate infiltration rate. Proper placement and penetration depth are important for reliable results. Optional centering pins, stands, and splash guards help improve test accuracy.
Key Uses
-
Golf greens, fairways, and sports fields
-
Lawns, playgrounds, and landscaping
-
Construction sites and septic systems
-
Wetlands, forestry, and agricultural land
These infiltration rings provide a durable, reliable solution for professional and educational soil infiltration testing.
Get results in as little as 15 minutes*
The double ring infiltrometer is the tool to quickly determine the infiltration rate of water into the soil. By using both an inner and outer ring, this device allows you to do infiltration testing efficiently and get good data in a short time—often in as little as 15 minutes. The double ring infiltrometer consists of two rings that are inserted into the soil, with water added to both. The design focuses the measurement on the vertical movement of water through the soil beneath the inner ring, minimizing lateral flow. This method is widely used in irrigation planning and soil analysis as it gives accurate infiltration rates that are critical in water management and land use decisions. Whether for routine soil testing or specialized research, the double ring infiltrometer gives reliable measurements to determine the suitability of soils for various applications.
Infiltration Rings Description
The double ring infiltrometer includes an inner and outer heavy-duty galvanized steel ring, built for accurate soil infiltration testing. Both rings feature double-thick top edges for durability and beveled bottom edges for easy insertion into different soil types. Designed to withstand repeated field use, these rings meet ASTM D3385 standards, ensuring consistent and reliable infiltration data for agricultural, environmental, and construction applications.
How Infiltration Rings Work
Water is added to both rings, but only the inner ring infiltration rate is measured. The outer ring limits lateral water movement, allowing vertical, one-dimensional flow beneath the inner ring. A sealed adjusting tube and bleed valve maintain a constant water level, which is critical for accurate measurement of soil infiltration and hydraulic conductivity.
Fast & Reliable Infiltration Results
The double ring infiltrometer delivers quick and precise infiltration rates, often within 15 minutes. By maintaining a constant head using control tubes, the system directly measures water movement into the soil. This makes it ideal for irrigation planning, soil management, and environmental studies where timely and accurate data is essential.
Applications and Benefits
The double ring infiltrometer has many applications and benefits for professionals working with soil and water. It is a trusted tool for measuring infiltration rates in various soil types including fine grained soils making it essential for irrigation design, drainage assessment and environmental monitoring. By giving accurate measurements of how quickly water infiltrates the soil the device helps optimize irrigation systems, improve plant water availability and reduce soil erosion. The double ring infiltrometer is also used according to ASTM D3385 standards to ensure results are consistent and reliable across different testing scenarios. Its rugged construction, ease of use and adaptability to different soils make it a preferred choice for agricultural, environmental and engineering applications. With fast and precise data the double ring infiltrometer helps with better decision making and sustainable land management practices.
Now for the first time a field instrument to measure the rate of water infiltration on all types of areas. This instrument measures the downward flow of water through the soil. The rate measured is expressed as the amount of water infiltrating per unit area and unit time. The infiltration rate measured during the test is dependent on soil and environmental conditions. The test is designed to measure one dimensional vertical flow which is important for calculating the coefficient of permeability. The rings are centered by the welded handle on top of the unit; this insures the rings stay in place while driving them into the soil.
The Heavy Duty Infiltration Rings are a useful and necessary instrument. Now you can see how slow or fast rain or irrigation water enters the soil. A great tool for engineers, earth science and forestry students.
15 minute test does not take into account getting soil to saturation. For a 15 minute test a moisture sensor should be used to qualify soil moisture.
