D0500/GZ2, Los Angeles Abrasion Machine
The D0500/GZ2, Los Angeles Abrasion Machine test, to EN and ASTM, is for testing coarse aggregates for abrasion resistance. The Los Angeles Abrasion Machine has a rolled steel drum with an inside dia. of 711 mm and internal length 508 mm, with a balanced drum assembly for better performance and precision. The drum on the LA Abrasion Machine is driven by a speed reducer and electric motor at a speed of 31 to 33 r.p.m. An enclosed chain drive ensures accurate drum rotation and the enclosed chain drive rotates the drum for better abrasion machine performance. The LA Abrasion Machine has an automatic counter which can be preset to the number of drum revolutions or total working time. There is no conventional slip clutch in the enclosed chain drive for better drum rotation.
The Los Angeles Abrasion Machine does not come with the abrasive charge which has to be ordered separately (see accessories).
The Los Angeles Abrasion Machine does not come with the safety cabinet and can be upgraded with:
-
CE compliant safety cabinet with door opening switch
-
Noise reduction and CE compliant safety cabinet with door opening switch
Overview of the Los Angeles Abrasion Machine
The Los Angeles Abrasion Machine is a popular testing device to measure the degradation of mineral aggregate due to combination of abrasion, impact and grinding. This rugged abrasion machine tests the aggregates like rocks and gravels for wear and tear and determines their durability and suitability for construction applications. Whether in road construction, concrete production or other civil engineering projects, the Los Angeles Abrasion Machine is a must have for material quality and longevity.

Test Method for Los Angeles Abrasion Machine
The test method of Los Angeles Abrasion Machine is to subject the aggregate sample to abrasion by steel spheres in a rotating drum. The abrasion loss is measured as percentage of the initial weight, to give a clear indication of the material durability. The test method is designed to ensure consistent and accurate testing condition and consists of the following steps:
-
Prepare the sample of aggregate: Select and weigh the aggregate sample to be tested.
-
Load the sample into the drum: Put the aggregate test samples in the drum.
-
Add steel spheres to the drum: Put the specified number of steel spheres in the drum.
-
Set the drum speed and test time: Set the abrasion machine to the required speed and time.
-
Start the machine and run for the set time: Start the test and let the drum rotate for the predetermined time.
-
Measure the abrasion loss: After the test weigh the remaining aggregate to calculate the abrasion loss.
Standards for D0500/GZ2, Los Angeles Abrasion Machine:
The EN 12697-17 method (Cantabro test) is for the determination of particle loss (abrasion) of porous asphalt mixtures and the EN 12697-43 is for the determination of resistance of bituminous mixtures or pavement to aviation fuel. Both procedures involves, among other laboratory tests, the abrasion in a Los Angeles tester conforming to EN 1097-2 without steel balls. The EN 12697-17 also prescribes a chamber or enclosure for the Los Angeles machine as the temperature shall remain constant with an uncertainty of 2°C. This is part of the broader Los Angeles abrasion test which is an indicator of aggregate quality.
This can be achieved by the soundproof and safety cabinet 48-D0500/CB2 which is however necessary to comply with CE directive.
The Controls Group D0500/GZ2, Los Angeles Abrasion Machine is a high quality testing equipment to measure the resistance of coarse aggregates to abrasion. This machine follows both EN and ASTM standards to give accurate and reliable results. The Los Angeles test which this machine performs is the resistance of coarse aggregates to abrasion by a rotating steel drum and abrasive steel balls.
The Los Angeles Abrasion Machine has a rolled rotating steel drum made of heavy steel cylinder and with precise dimensions to give a consistent testing environment. The drum is rotated by a speed reducer driven by an electric motor with a speed range of 31 to 33 rpm. The machine also has an automatic counter that can be set to the desired number of drum revolutions or total working time.
Please note that the Los Angeles Abrasion Machine is supplied without the abrasive charge which needs to be ordered separately based on the standard you are using. The safety cabinet is not included but can be upgraded with a CE compliant cabinet with door opening switch for added safety. For those who need noise reduction, an option is available to add a noise reduction and CE compliant safety cabinet.
The Controls Group D0500/GZ2, Los Angeles Abrasion Machine has several features to ensure accurate testing and user friendly. Its stiff welded structural steel frame gives stability and reliability, high resolution graphical display and membrane keyboard for easy operation. The machine also has language options Italian, English, French, Spanish, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian and Cesky.
In specifications this machine runs on 110V, 60Hz, 1ph with power consumption of 740W. Dimensions are approximately 1005x820x950mm and weight is around 350kg.
The Controls Group D0500/GZ2, Los Angeles Abrasion Machine meets various international standards including EN 12697-17, EN 12697-43, EN 1097-2 and ASTM C131. These standards covers various testing methods such as particle loss determination of porous asphalt mixtures and resistance of bituminous mixtures or pavement to aviation fuel.
To meet the requirements of EN 12697-17 standard a soundproof and security cabinet is recommended. The 48-D0500/CB2 cabinet maintains a constant temperature with an uncertainty of 2°C to give accurate and consistent testing conditions and complies with CE directive.
In summary the Controls Group D0500/GZ2, Los Angeles Abrasion Machine is a robust testing equipment to give accurate results for the resistance of coarse aggregates to abrasion.
