Dynamic Shear Rheometers (DSRs) are essential tools for evaluating asphalt binders, measuring their resistance to aging, temperature variations, and mechanical stress across a wide temperature range. They play a critical role in analyzing polymer-modified, performance-graded (PG) binders used in Superpave mix designs. The process involves placing a disc-shaped binder sample between two parallel plates and applying horizontal oscillation to assess its dynamic shear properties.
The Anton Paar SmartPave 92 Dynamic Shear Rheometer is specifically designed for routine quality control testing of 8mm and 25mm samples in asphalt production facilities. This model is ideal for classifying SHRP/Superpave PG binders with precision and efficiency.
Key features include a synchronous, brushless DC motor mounted on a frictionless air bearing, providing accurate movement and sensitive measurements. It delivers a maximum torque of 125 mNm and a minimum oscillation torque of 1 μNm, with a speed range from 10⁻³ to 1,500 rpm. A clean, dry, oil-free compressed air supply is required for operation, with recommended pressures between 58–101 psi (4–7 bar) and optimal performance at 87 psi (6 bar).
The SmartPave 92 comes equipped with RheoCompass™ software, tailored for the asphalt industry. This user-friendly software offers step-by-step guidance for standard test procedures, fully automated temperature calibration and verification routines, and simplified data retrieval and reporting. The Toolmaster™ feature automatically recognizes testing components and temperature control units, eliminating manual data entry during setup. The Quick-Connect coupling enables fast and easy component changes, while TruRay LED lighting ensures a clear view of the sample and measurement surface. A sliding rail design further simplifies sample access during trimming and setup.
The SmartPave I DSR is a cost-effective solution for daily quality control testing. While it includes upper and lower measuring plates and fittings for 8mm and 25mm samples, it does not feature the Peltier-controlled temperature hood and therefore does not fully comply with ASTM and AASHTO temperature control standards. Temperature regulation is limited to the lower plate, managed by the Peltier system in the base.
