5mm Agate Grinding Ball

Precision Milling for Optimal Results: Grinding Balls are essential components when operating Fritsch Planetary Mills. These precisely manufactured balls are placed inside grinding bowls along with your sample material to facilitate the milling process. The ultimate fineness of your ground sample is directly influenced by both the size and quantity of the grinding balls employed.

Choosing the Right Ball Size and Quantity:

  • Size Matters: Generally, larger grinding balls are better suited for achieving a coarser product, while smaller balls are ideal for yielding a finer, more pulverized material. For consistent results, it is crucial to avoid mixing balls of different sizes within the same grinding jar.
  • Optimizing Quantity: Increasing the number of grinding balls can significantly reduce grinding times and lead to finer particle size distributions. However, there's an optimal loading point. A good rule of thumb is to ensure that the total volume of grinding balls and sample does not exceed two-thirds of the grinding bowl's capacity. This leaves the remaining one-third of the bowl volume free for efficient and effective grinding action, preventing overcrowding and ensuring proper energy transfer. User trials are highly recommended to determine the best ball size and quantity for your specific application and desired outcome.

Material Selection for Durability and Purity: To ensure both efficient grinding and prevent contamination, it is strongly recommended that your grinding bowls and balls are made from a material that is harder than the sample being processed. For extremely hard samples, consider using robust tungsten carbide balls within steel bowls, or ultra-hard zirconium oxide balls in corundum bowls. Please note that when using dissimilar materials, there is always a potential risk of cross-contamination, which should be considered based on your application's purity requirements.

Product Details:

  • Individual Sale: Balls with a diameter of 3mm or smaller are typically sold in packs of 100 pieces. All other larger balls, including this 5mm Agate Grinding Ball, are sold individually.
  • Compatibility: This 5mm Agate Grinding Ball is compatible with Fritsch Classic Grinding Bowls and Premium Grinding Bowls, specifically suitable for sizes including 500ml, 250ml, and 80ml capacities. Grinding bowls are sold separately.

Agate Benefits: Agate grinding balls are particularly well-suited for grinding medium-hard to brittle samples where contamination from metal or ceramic materials must be minimized. They offer high wear resistance and excellent chemical inertness, making them a preferred choice for sensitive analytical applications.
