Self Leveling Concrete that can withstand Light Vehicular Traffic

Self leveling concrete has many benefits that makes it a popular choice for both residential and commercial applications. One of its biggest benefit is easy application, quick and easy to resurface existing concrete. It can also create a decorative concrete finished wear surface through techniques such as pigmented color dyes, stains and mechanical polishing. It’s durable enough to withstand light vehicular traffic, perfect for garage floor coverings and other exterior concrete areas and gives you flat surfaces for various floor finishes. Self leveling concrete is also versatile in design, can create a flat surface to accommodate various floor finishes such as ceramic tile, natural stone, hardwood resilient flooring, VCT, linoleum and concrete overlays. It’s a great option to level uneven floor coverings and a solid base for finished floor installations.

Before applying exterior self-leveling concrete overlays the concrete surface must be clean, dry and free of any debris, oils or other substances that may interfere with the bonding. Proper surface preparation is key to getting flat surfaces and for self-leveling concrete to adhere well and give you a smooth finish. Here’s what to do:

  1. Clean the Surface: Use a pressure washer or a broom to remove any dirt, dust or debris from the concrete. A clean surface is better for adhesion of the self-leveling compound.

  2. Fill Cracks: Fill any cracks or holes with patching compound and let it dry. This is important to have a smooth and even base for the overlay.

  3. Remove Old Coatings: If the surface has an existing coating such as paint or sealant remove it using a suitable solvent or stripper. This will allow the new overlay to bond better to the old concrete.

  4. Etch the Surface: Use a concrete etcher to roughen the surface. This will give better bond between old concrete and new overlay for a durable finish.

  5. Prime: Finally apply a primer specifically for exterior self-leveling concrete overlays. This is the final step to create a strong bond between old concrete and new overlay.

By following these steps you can ensure your surface is ready for self-leveling concrete and will have a smooth finish.

How to Apply Self Leveling Concrete for Resurfacing Exterior Concrete Areas

Applying self leveling concrete is a 2 step process: surface preparation and overlay application. Epoxy coatings can be used as a protective solution to resist wear, chemicals and UV exposure. Surface preparation is key and includes drying of any applied filler and sealer, priming the concrete surface and filling in any existing cracks. To avoid common mistakes use the right tools such as trowels or squeegees, mixing paddles or drills with mixing attachments, buckets, measuring tools, levels or straight edges, brooms or brushes and safety gear. Once the surface is prepared the self leveling concrete can be mixed and applied according to the manufacturer’s instructions and you’ll have a smooth finish. Make sure to apply correctly to get flat surfaces which is important for a professional look.

Mixing and applying exterior self-leveling concrete overlays requires attention to details to get it right. Here’s what to do:

  1. Follow the Manufacturer’s Instructions: Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for mixing and applying the overlay. This will ensure you use the right water to powder ratio and get the right consistency.

  2. Mix the Overlay Correctly: Use the right water to powder ratio as specified by the manufacturer. Mix well to avoid lumps and get a smooth flowable consistency.

  3. Apply: Pour the mixed overlay onto the prepared surface and spread it with a trowel or squeegee. Work in small sections to maintain even coverage and don’t let the overlay set too fast.

  4. Use a Leveling Tool: To get even application and correct thickness use a leveling tool like laser level or spirit level. This will get you flat surfaces ready for any floor finish.

  5. Finish the Surface: Once applied use a trowel or broom to finish the surface, get a smooth and even texture. This is important to get a professional look.

By following these mixing and application techniques you’ll get a smooth and durable self-leveling concrete surface ready for any floor finish.

Maintaining and caring for self leveling concrete is important to keep it looking and working good. Clean regularly to prevent staining and damage, use pH neutral cleaners and sweep and mop with household detergents or soaps and then rinse thoroughly. To protect the concrete from spills and weathering apply a sealer. Epoxy primer can also prevent staining. Regular inspection and immediate repair is important to address any wear and damage to extend the life and durability of the self leveling concrete surface. Epoxy coatings can also resist wear, chemicals and UV exposure, so it’s a good protective solution.

Despite planning and execution everything can go wrong during exterior self-leveling concrete overlays. Here are some common problems and solutions:

  1. Inadequate Bonding: If the overlay is not bonding to the old concrete check the surface preparation. Make sure the surface was clean, dry and primed correctly before applying the overlay.

  2. Uneven Surface: If the surface is uneven check the leveling tool and make sure it’s calibrated correctly. Also make sure you’re working in small sections to maintain even coverage and get flat surfaces.

  3. Cracking: If the overlay is cracking check the thickness of the application. Make sure it’s within the manufacturer’s recommended range. Applying too thin or too thick can cause cracking.

  4. Discoloration: If the overlay is discolored check the mixing ratio. Make sure you’re using the right water to powder ratio and mixing well to get a consistent color.

  5. Delamination: If the overlay is delaminating check the surface preparation and make sure the primer was applied correctly. Surface preparation is key to prevent delamination.

By following these and common problems you’ll get a successful exterior self-leveling concrete overlay and a long lasting finish.
