10mm Hardened Stainless Steel Grinding Ball

Product Description Our 10mm Grinding Balls, crafted from high-quality hardened stainless steel, are essential for effective sample preparation in Fritsch Planetary Mills. These balls are placed into grinding bowls along with your sample material to achieve size reduction through high-energy impact and friction. The durability of hardened stainless steel ensures longevity and consistent performance, even with abrasive materials.

Grinding Principles The final particle size of your ground sample is directly influenced by the size, quantity, and material of the grinding balls used.

  • Ball Size and Final Fineness: As a general rule, the size of the grinding balls dictates the final fineness of the sample. Larger balls, like this 10mm option, transfer more kinetic energy per impact, making them effective for breaking down larger particles and achieving a coarser end product. For a finer grind, smaller diameter balls are recommended. It is best practice to use balls of a single, uniform size within a grinding jar to ensure consistent results.

  • Ball Quantity and Grinding Time: The number of balls used affects the efficiency of the grinding process. Increasing the quantity of balls can reduce grinding times and produce a narrower particle size distribution. However, there is an optimal load for each bowl size.

  • Volume and Loading: For effective grinding, the total volume of the grinding balls and the sample should not exceed two-thirds of the grinding bowl's volume. This leaves the remaining one-third of the space empty, which is crucial for allowing the balls to move freely and achieve the necessary impact energy for efficient size reduction.

Material Selection To prevent excessive wear and potential sample contamination, the grinding media (bowls and balls) should be harder than the material being ground.

  • Standard Applications: Using stainless steel balls in stainless steel bowls is ideal for most standard grinding tasks.
  • Hard-to-Grind Samples: For exceptionally hard samples, consider using ultra-hard grinding media. For instance, using tungsten carbide balls in steel-lined bowls or zirconium oxide balls in sintered corundum bowls can significantly improve grinding results. Be aware that mixing materials (e.g., steel balls in a ceramic bowl) can increase the risk of cross-contamination from abrasion.
