Desiccator Grease: A Guide to Desiccators

Seedburo dessicators are used for fast drying of prepared samples and as anaerobic culture jars. Desiccants like sulfuric acid, phosphorous pentoxide, calcium chloride and silica gel can be used multiple times and safely in Seedburo jars. For long-term vacuum grease storage, all surfaces should be cleaned and greased with a silicone-based vacuum grease (SD200G) to ensure sealing desiccators seal airtight. This is crucial for sealing desiccators effectively, maintaining an airtight environment. Each dessicator comes with a porcelain plate.

  • Plate only: Ship wt: 3lbs, Ship dims: 15” (L) x 15” (W) x 4” (H).

Don’t forget to add desiccator grease to your cart.

Drierite Indicating DesiccantThis desiccant is made from gypsum (calcium sulfate) and is a general purpose drying agent. As it absorbs moisture the desiccant changes from blue to pink in color and can absorb 6-10% of its weight in water depending on the relative humidity. Made from >98% Calcium Sulfate and < 2% Cobalt Chloride.

Description and Purpose

A desiccator is a laboratory essential to dry and store samples in a controlled environment. Its purpose is to maintain a dry atmosphere, free of moisture and humidity, which is critical to prevent degradation or contamination of sensitive materials. Desiccators often feature a valve with a tapered stem at one end for secure insertion, ensuring functionality and safety. Desiccators are used in many industries including pharmaceutical, biotech and food processing where sample integrity is key.

What is Desiccator Grease?

Desiccator grease, also known as vacuum desiccator grease, is an essential lubricant in laboratory settings. It is specifically designed to seal desiccators, ensuring they maintain a dry environment by preventing moisture from entering. This grease is formulated with a combination of chemicals that offer low vapor pressure and resistance to both acidic and alkaline solutions. By using desiccator grease, you can enhance the performance and longevity of your desiccators, making it a crucial component for any lab.

Desiccator Parts and Stopcock Grease Maintenance

A desiccator consists of a glass or plastic container, a lid and a desiccant material. The desiccant (silica gel or activated alumina) absorbs moisture from the air to maintain a dry environment inside the desiccator. To function optimally maintenance is required. This includes cleaning the desiccator and replacing the desiccant as needed. Also, apply desiccator grease to the ground glass joints and valves to ensure a tight seal to prevent moisture from entering the desiccator and compromising its performance.

Types of Desiccators

Desiccators come in different types:

  • Vacuum desiccators: These desiccators use a vacuum pump to remove moisture from the air, perfect for sensitive samples.

  • Non-vacuum desiccators: These rely on the desiccant material to absorb moisture from the air, simple and easy to use.

  • Large desiccators: For larger samples or equipment, these desiccators have more space and dry environment.

  • Small desiccators: For smaller samples or equipment, these desiccators are compact and dry.

Using Desiccator Grease with Stopcock Grease

To achieve an optimal seal in your desiccator, it’s important to use desiccator grease in conjunction with stopcock grease. Start by applying a small amount of stopcock grease to the ground glass joints of the desiccator. Next, add a small amount of desiccator grease to the stopcock valve assembly. This dual application helps create a tight seal, effectively preventing moisture from compromising the desiccator’s environment. Remember to choose the right type of desiccator grease for your specific needs, as some greases are designed for particular types of desiccators or valves.

Quality Control and Certificates of Analysis

At Carl ROTH, we prioritize quality control to ensure our desiccator stopcock grease meets the highest standards. Each batch undergoes rigorous testing, and we provide certificates of analysis that detail the product’s density, boiling point, flash point, and melting point.
