The Aggregate Specific Gravity and Absorption Device is a fast, accurate and simple method for specific gravity and absorption determinations of fine or coarse aggregates. The system performs two slightly different measurement procedures for coarse and fine aggregates. Both procedures use proprietary instrumentation for direct measurement of water displacement, making the test accurate, highly repeatable and easy to use. Since a saturated surface-dry determination is not necessary, common subjective errors are eliminated. Absorption rate can be used for an in-depth analysis at the aggregate absorption characteristics.
When testing coarse aggregates, an acrylic sample chamber containing approximately 1,000g of sample is lowered into a water-filled calibrated measuring vessel. For fine aggregates, the sample is introduced by pouring into a measuring tube while a stirring device ensures even distribution. A sensor reads displacement and initial bulk gravity is displayed. A series of measurements and calculations to determine final bulk gravity, absorption and absorption rate are automatically performed. The entire process takes about five minutes, and is guided by step-by-step on-screen prompts for easy operation and elimination of user error. Results are displayed on completion and can be saved to a user-defined file for later reference and reporting.
The BCL-SG-9 Aggregate Specific Gravity and Absorption Device includes a Windows®-based laptop computer with preloaded software, sample chamber, measuring vessel, displacement measuring sensor, and interface unit. The system also includes a holding tube and stirrer/funnel for use with fine aggregate. The measuring vessel, sample chamber, and displacement sensor are constructed from rugged, clear acrylic and are easily cleaned with soap and water. For increased testing efficiency, order additional Sample Chambers and Stirrer/Funnels.
