What is Self Leveling Concrete?
Self leveling concrete is a special concrete overlay to resurface, smooth and level old concrete surface. Resurfacing exterior concrete areas with self-leveling overlays serves to not only level and smooth the surfaces but also to enhance the appearance and aesthetic appeal of outdoor concrete spaces. This flowable, self leveling compound is for exterior concrete areas such as driveways, walkways, patios and other outdoor spaces. Easy to apply and durable it’s a popular choice to resurface and level uneven concrete surfaces. Whether you’re on new construction or restoring an old concrete, self leveling concrete is the solution for a smooth finish.
Benefits of Self Leveling Concrete that Withstand Light Vehicular Traffic
Self leveling concrete has many advantages that makes it a popular choice for both residential and commercial applications. One of its biggest benefits is ease of application, quick and easy to resurface existing concrete. It can also create a decorative concrete finished wear surface through techniques such as pigmented color dyes, stains, and mechanical polishing. It’s durable enough to withstand light vehicular traffic so it’s perfect for garage floors and other exterior concrete areas. Self leveling concrete is also versatile in design, can create a flat surface to accommodate various floor finishes such as ceramic tiles, natural stone, hardwood flooring, VCT, linoleum and concrete overlays. It’s a great option to level uneven floors and a solid base for finished floor installations.
Preparing the Surface
Preparing the concrete is a crucial step before applying exterior self-leveling concrete overlays. The surface must be clean, dry, and free of any debris, oils, or other substances that may interfere with the bonding process. Here are some steps to follow:
-
Clean the Surface: Start by using a pressure washer or a broom to remove any dirt, dust, or debris from the concrete. A clean surface ensures better adhesion of the self-leveling compound.
-
Repair Any Cracks: Fill any cracks or holes with a patching compound and allow it to dry completely. This step is essential to create a smooth and even base for the overlay.
-
Remove Old Coatings: If the surface has an existing coating, such as paint or sealant, remove it using a suitable solvent or stripper. This will help the new overlay bond more effectively to the old concrete.
-
Etch the Surface: Use a concrete etcher to roughen the surface. This creates a better bond between the old concrete and the new overlay, ensuring a durable finish.
-
Apply a Primer: Finally, apply a primer specifically designed for exterior self-leveling concrete overlays. This step is crucial for creating a strong bond between the old concrete and the new overlay.
By following these steps, you can ensure that your surface is properly prepared for the application of self-leveling concrete, resulting in a smooth and durable finish.
How to Apply Self Leveling Concrete for Resurfacing Exterior Concrete Areas
Applying self leveling concrete is a two step process: surface preparation and overlay application. Epoxy coatings can be used as a protective solution to enhance resistance against wear, chemicals, and UV exposure. Surface preparation is key and includes drying of any applied filler and sealer, priming the concrete surface and filling in any existing cracks. To avoid common mistakes use the right tools such as trowels or squeegees, mixing paddles or drills with mixing attachments, buckets, measuring tools, levels or straight edges, brooms or brushes and safety gear. Once the surface is prepared the self leveling concrete can be mixed and applied according to the manufacturer’s instructions and you’ll have a smooth finish.
Mixing and Application Techniques
Mixing and applying exterior self-leveling concrete overlays requires careful attention to detail to ensure a successful installation. Here are some tips to follow:
-
Follow the Manufacturer’s Instructions: Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for mixing and applying the overlay. This ensures that you use the correct ratio of water to powder and achieve the desired consistency.
-
Mix the Overlay Correctly: Use the correct ratio of water to powder as specified by the manufacturer. Mix thoroughly to avoid lumps and ensure a smooth, flowable consistency.
-
Apply the Overlay: Pour the mixed overlay onto the prepared surface and spread it using a trowel or squeegee. Work in small sections to maintain even coverage and prevent the overlay from setting too quickly.
-
Use a Leveling Tool: To ensure the overlay is applied evenly and to the correct thickness, use a leveling tool such as a laser level or a spirit level. This helps create a flat surface that is ready for any floor finish.
-
Finish the Surface: Once the overlay is applied, use a trowel or broom to finish the surface, creating a smooth and even texture. This step is crucial for achieving a professional-looking result.
By following these mixing and application techniques, you can achieve a smooth and durable self-leveling concrete surface that is ready for any floor finish.
Maintenance
Maintaining and caring for self leveling concrete is important to keep it looking and working good. Regular cleaning is needed to prevent staining and damage, use pH neutral cleaners and sweep and mop with household detergents or soaps and then rinse thoroughly. To protect the concrete from spills and weathering apply a sealer. Epoxy primer can also prevent staining. Regular inspection and immediate repair is important to address any wear and damage to extend the life and durability of the self leveling concrete surface. Additionally, epoxy coatings can enhance resistance against wear, chemicals, and UV exposure, making them an excellent protective solution.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Despite careful planning and execution, issues can still arise during the installation of exterior self-leveling concrete overlays. Here are some common issues and their solutions:
-
Inadequate Bonding: If the overlay is not bonding properly to the old concrete, check the surface preparation. Ensure that the surface was clean, dry, and primed correctly before applying the overlay.
-
Uneven Surface: If the surface is uneven, check the leveling tool and ensure that it is calibrated correctly. Also, make sure you are working in small sections to maintain even coverage.
-
Cracking: If the overlay is cracking, check the thickness of the application. Ensure that it is within the manufacturer’s recommended range. Applying the overlay too thin or too thick can lead to cracking.
-
Discoloration: If the overlay is discolored, check the mixing ratio. Ensure that you are using the correct ratio of water to powder and mixing thoroughly to achieve a consistent color.
-
Delamination: If the overlay is delaminating, check the surface preparation and ensure that the primer was applied correctly. Proper surface preparation is key to preventing delamination.
By following these tips and troubleshooting common issues, you can ensure a successful installation of exterior self-leveling concrete overlays and achieve a durable and long-lasting finish.
