Blaine Air Permeability Filter Paper 1000/Pack – Precision-Grade for Lab Testing

Blaine Air Permeability Filter Paper is a single use 12.7mm (0.5in), grade 597 filter paper for testing with the Blaine Air Permeability Apparatus.

New filters are often applied to the perforated disk and on the leveled cement more than once during a test, and multiple samples should be tested to ensure consistency. The thickness of the filter paper can effect test results, so use papers of uniform thickness.

Features:

  • Grade 597 filter paper

  • Single use during testing

Blaine Air Permeability Apparatus determines the fineness of Portland Cement by measuring the specific surface area of fine materials in square centimeters per gram of test sample.

A quantity of air is drawn through a bed of definite porosity, and the rate of airflow is determined by the pore volume in the bed, a function of the size of particles. Adjust the pressure or airflow rate to get accurate measurements. The specific surface area and other values are obtained through the measurement process.

Results from the apparatus help validate filter performance, and standard deviations are used to show the variability of repeated measurements. There is often a correlation between pore size and air permeability in filter testing, and a proportional relationship may exist between airflow rate and pressure drop under certain conditions.

The relationship between pore size and air permeability can be described by an equation, and an empirical model can be used to predict air permeability based on input parameters. Results can be tabulated for easy comparison of different samples or test runs.

The apparatus consists of a stainless steel test cell, plunger, perforated disc, calibrated U-tube manometer, and rubber aspirator and bulb, all mounted on a wood panel with a base.

Some air permeability testers use a piston to control airflow. An 8oz bottle of red spirit manometer fluid, a package of filter paper, and a woodblock for holding the cell during filling are also included.

NIST Portland Cement #46h is required by ASTM and AASHTO standards for the calibration of the apparatus.

Overview

Air permeability is a fundamental property of filter media, including both non-woven filter media and filter paper, that directly affects their performance in a wide range of filtration applications.

Defined as the rate at which air flows perpendicularly through a specific area of material under a set pressure differential, air permeability is a key indicator of how well a filter will perform in terms of filtration efficiency, flow resistance and overall material quality.

Whether used in industrial filtration, laboratory testing or product development, understanding the air permeability of a filter is essential to evaluate its characteristics and ensure it meets the required standards for pressure, performance and durability.

This section covers the key features, technical details and practical uses of air permeability in filter media, highlighting its importance in achieving optimal filtration results.

Specifications

Filter media air permeability is determined by several key properties each of which plays a critical role in the material’s filtration performance. Pore size is one of the most important, as it determines the size that can pass through the filter and directly affects filtration efficiency and flow resistance.

Porosity, the proportion of void spaces within the material, affects both the air flow rate and the filter’s ability to capture particles. Basis weight, the mass of the filter media per unit area, affects the density and structure of the material and therefore air permeability and filtration efficiency.

Fiber diameter is another key characteristic, finer fibers result in smaller pore sizes and higher filtration efficiency, coarser fibers allow for greater air flow. These characteristics are measured using specialized methods and equipment to ensure the filter media meets the required air permeability, flow and filtration performance.

Specifications

Measuring air permeability in filter media requires precise specifications and standardized procedures to get reliable results. A differential pressure gauge is used to measure the pressure drop across the filter material during testing.

The standard test method, such as ASTM D737, uses specialized test equipment that includes a clamping device to hold the sample, a guard ring to prevent edge leakage and a flow meter to measure the air flow. During the test, air is forced through a known area of the filter media under a controlled pressure differential and the air flow rate is recorded.

From these measurements, average pore size, maximum pore size and porosity can be calculated. These specifications are critical to understand the filtration performance of the filter media and ensure it meets the required air permeability, pressure and quality standards.

Maximum Pore Size

Maximum pore size is a key parameter in filter media characterization as it affects both filtration efficiency and flow resistance. A filter with a larger maximum pore size will allow for higher air flow rates which can be beneficial in applications where low resistance is required.

However this may come at the expense of filtration efficiency as larger pores can allow unwanted to pass through. A smaller maximum pore size will enhance filtration efficiency by capturing finer material but may reduce the overall flow rate. Techniques such as porometry or the bubbling method are used to measure the maximum pore size of filter media.

Careful consideration of maximum pore size during design and selection is critical to ensure the filter media delivers the required balance of flow and filtration performance for the intended application.

Applications

Air permeability is a critical property in many applications from industrial filtration and air purification to water treatment and chemical processing. Media with controlled air permeability, nonwoven filter media and filter paper are engineered to provide optimal filtration efficiency, flow rate and pressure drop for specific uses.

In industries where particulate removal or contaminant removal is critical, understanding and optimizing air permeability allows manufacturers to develop filters that meet stringent performance requirements.

Whether designing filters for HVAC systems, laboratory analysis or mass production of filtration products, attention to air permeability, pore size and maximum pore size ensures the final product delivers reliable performance, durability and quality.

By understanding the key characteristics and specifications of air permeability, manufacturers can create filter media tailored to the unique requirements of each application and deliver effective and efficient filtration solutions.
